A topic was already started but I wanted to go ahead and post on behalf of TheRunaways.com. Sandy did indeed pass away a few hours ago and we have updated the front page to let everybody know. I really don't have the words at the moment to say something, I may later, but please feel free to post your memories, stories, condolences or the like.

Thank you for all of your support the last few months. It meant a lot to a lot of people.

Chrys

My name is Brian Lucey. I have been Shooting pictures of The Runaways and all the ladies in their solo efforts for the past 29 years. The news of Sandy's passing was a strong hit to the stomach. Some people in our lives seem to just live forever and we carry that feeling in our hearts because of all the wonderful memories that person has given us. It is so easy to feel angry at this time. Why was someone so special taken from us so soon? I wish i had the answer. I can tell you that we have the gift of her music and we can share that gift with our children and our friends and that will give Sandy the ultimate tribute. I have posted a short story about Sandy on Joans official website. Please read it and think of all the great memories this talented artist has given you. My heart goes out to her family and friends.
Peace be with you Sandy....

The collage is beautiful Chryss. Good work.

I am totally heartbroken about Sandy.
Can hardly believe it's true.

Our little drummer grrrl is gone
but her BEAT will live on!

Rest in peace Sandy. I wish all of Sandy's family and friends all the best in their time of sorry. I'm pretty numb and morose right now so, that's about all can muster up after staring at the screen for 5 minutes. I'm still a little shell shocked. [Sad]

Rest In Peace, Sandy

I have been a Runaways fan since 1977 and esp. Sandy was my hero. Her drumming on the albums and appereance of band photoshootings.
I wanna wish all family and friends all the best in the tough times! Support each other in this big loss.

Love,

Wow. This is truly sad news. Although I had not seen Sandy in years having known her since she was 16 this is just so hard to grasp.

I have not posted here in years, either... having left Los Angleles 2 years ago I feel so out of touch with my past.

I worked so closely with Sandy for those first 2 years the band was together, after that we would occasionally bump into each other.

I am rarely at a loss for words, but this had done it.

We are all fortunate to have known Sandy, either personally or known her reputation as a ground-breaking musician. We can always look back at the photos and listen to the recordings and wish things were different.

I am sad, but I am comforted somewhat by having spent time with Sandy and for having known her.

She would not have wanted this to be a time for tears.

In the early 80's, my college radio buddies and I planned to do a show called "Audiobiography" and the first artist that we planned on spotlighting was Runaways drummer Sandy West.

I had met Sandy through another friend and attended a few of her "showcases" for "The Sandy West Band" and felt that between the story of the Runaways and the hard work she was putting into her solo work that there was a good story to be told. We did a two plus hour session with her and her band, but like many other projects at that time, it never happened, for God knows what reason.

That band broke up, we all went on to various careers (two of us did end up in radio) and the cassettes of that interview sat in a box in my garage until last night.

With the death of Sandy West I decided to revisit the interview. I loved her honesty. I loved her drive. I loved the respect she gave the other musicians in her band, a band made up of a great lead guitar player named Greg Michaels who has since vanished from the music business. Even Google can't seem to locate him.

I hope at some point to edit that interview into a long form piece that will properly tell Sandy's story, but until then you can cut and past: http://rock50.com/Rock50digest25.mp3 into your browser to hear a portion of that interview about the birth, growth and death of the Runaways, mixed with three of their greatest hits.

Added 10/29****Since I first posted this "mix", rock writer Dave Marsh played it on his Sirius radio show. I've "reposted" the "mix" to include Dave's intro and outro, which include his thoughts on the Runaways and Sandy.

Mike,
Thank you SO MUCH for posting that piece you have.
I'm listening to her sweet voice as I type this.
It's hard not to get emotional on hearing that.
I will remember her always, always in my heart.
Today, I was watching CNN, and news of Sandy's passing came on the screen, stating her involvement in "...the groundbreaking, all female rock band The Runaways in the 70's".
Then, when I signed on to aol, the headline of her passing was a main story.
It's so important that attention and respect be paid to one who has inspired so many.

to foreverinmyheart,we hope you and your family can feel the love that radiates from us to you and yours in your time of mourning. your aunt Sandy to us was one of the greatest women that ever lived.most of us who never even met her or got to see her in concert are still in shock. we had no idea she wouldnt pull though.we had no idea she was in a hospice. we are so glad she had a large and loving family there to take care of her in her time of need.tho to my knowlege the runaways never played here i would loved to have seen her and met her in person.we are still hoping it's a bad dream we will wake up from .i hope you will allow the public to send flowers to her service so we can show one more time how loved she was. you have my deepest sympathy. tim henslee

Hello Gus and Everyone...

I agree, it is good to see your name and it is good to catch up on the postings here. I am still in shock. Having not been somewhat isolated, I did not realise that Sandy had been ill and for that I truly feel bad. I am living in Canada and while I do get to Los Angeles 5 or 6 times a year I really feel out of touch with things going on in the music industry.

I am leaving for a long weekend in New York today to see The Stones but I can assure you I will raise a glass (or two) to Sandy. When I return, I would like to be more involved here. The Runaways, were such an important part of my life and it is so good to be able to contribute here.

Again, Sandy will be missed, but from what I understand she is clearly in a better, far less painful place right now.

Cheers!

Tom

Tom, I sent you a private message when you have time to check it.

Over the next several days I'll be working on Sandy's special tribute page, which will be a celebration more than anything else. If anyone has anything they want to donate to it (poems, thoughts, pictures you took, drawings, whatever), please let me know through The Runaways.com contact page.

Thanks!

I feel so angry sorry I just can't help it this seems so very unfair and unreal I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way, I also thank-you Mike for hearing that sweet voice again, when I first met Sandy the Runaways had already broken up, she was so cute she kept saying you really don't know who I am, even taking me and showing me one of their albums, I did get to meet Joan, we both were backstage at a few of Joan's shows for her I Love Rock n Roll tour, I am kicking myself for ever leaving LA as I had lost touch with her and wasn't able to find her now I understand why, oh God she is so so missed, my deepest sympathies to all of her family, I had the pleasure of meeting her Mom and some of her sisters they are amazing people I have no doubt she was surrounded by love at all times. Chris the collage is amazing, deepest thanks to you and everyone else we all have in common we love and miss her and we will keep her memory alive!

Love Bobbi

So sad to hear this news. I saw Sandy with The Runaways 4 times, starting in October 1976, and they were a great inspiration. At a time when female rock bands were almost unheard of, the power of Sandy's drumming must have been a crucial factor in the band convincing people that they could really deliver. In a way I feel like I knew her, because I don't think Sandy had any interest in projecting an image, she just acted naturally. And we know that no one would have loved to have seen the band play together again more than Sandy. She put her heart into the band, and she will remain in our hearts.

I feel like I am in such good company when I read all these posts. People who knew Sandy better than my pinhole through the cardboard view of being a fan since "Dawn: A Portrait..." in 1976 (when I discovered The Runaways) up til now. I'm weeping for Sandy and for myself, because I will never touch the amount of people that Sandy has, but I can work on that now.
Love, ****

I had the privilege of meeting Sandy when she was playing with her band in the mid-80's around the LA area. I have great memories of hanging out as she did sound checks. One time in particular sticks out in my mind. She was doing a show with Cherie, and they were done with the official sound check, but Sandy was still playing. She started playing the drum riff from Dead End Justice and no one except me seem to notice! She saw me and realized I got it, and her grin just got bigger as she played it.

She truly was an incredible drummer who never received the recognition she deserved. When I heard she had cancer, I was shocked, but knowing how strong she was, I was sure she would beat it -- and was sad to learn she could not.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

I never got the chance to meet Sandy, my loss. In the 70's Minneapolis was a very different world than L.A. I learned about the Runaways in Circus magazine. I was immediately struck by Sandy's beautiful eyes and smile. I was able to see Runaways play here twice, opening for the Ramones, the girl could PLAY! The second time she sang Wild Thing. Truly the high light of the set. My condolences to all that knew her well. Rock In Peace.
